Week 4 - Chim Chim Cher-ee

tenor.gif

For this fourth week, the Mary Poppins Quest wanted to honour the most important element of this film: the music!

STAFF (= portée) is a set of five lines, including the four spaces between them, on which music is written. A SCORE is the music for a movie. CLEF is another musical term, synonym of "key". Finally, SHERMAN is the name of the brothers who wrote the songs of Mary Poppins.

Once you had connected all the clues to MUSIC, you had to go to Mr Dedieu's classroom to find a little music box, and you had to recognize the song it played: Chim Chim Cher-ee.

All the songs were written by the Sherman brothers, who wrote many songs for Disney (The Jungle Book, The Aristocats...). They won 2 Academy Awards for the music of Mary Poppins, and Chim Chim Cher-ee even won an Oscar! Here is a video of the Sherman brothers accepting the Oscar for Chim Chim Cheree in 1965:

The songs of the new movie Mary Poppins Returns (2018) are also very memorable. Many of them echo the songs of the 1964 movie. Here is a very interesting comparison between the songs of the two movies:
